African Meal - Meal Challenge Week 7

Last night we ate an African type meal for the week 7 meal challenge...at least that is what the recipe is called! Everyone said that they liked it, though it probably won't be a weekly staple around here...but definitely something different for every now and then:)

The picture might scare you away, but at least read through the recipe to get a better idea of what it was like!

  • 1-2 cups rice
  • 1 1/2 lb. hamburger
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1-2 tsp. curry powder (you can add more if you like)
  1. Cook rice according to instructions.
  2. Fry up the hamburger and onion, breaking it up as it browns.
  3. Add the seasonings and cook another minute or two.
  4. Serve family style. To assemble, place hamburger over the rice on your plate and then add the condiments.
Condiments
  • grated Cheddar cheese
  • shredded lettuce
  • chopped cucumber
  • raisins
  • sliced bananas (we omitted this:)
  • diced canned or fresh peaches - mangos would work too
  • chopped peanuts
  • shredded coconut
  • chopped red onion

Did you try a new meal this week? If you shared it on your blog, make sure to let Meredith know and she will post a link on her blog ~ Striving to Serve at Home ~

After a long day of driving goats around for breeding purposes, picking up 4 more bushels of apples for canning, chopping green tomatoes and all the fixin's for Chutney and all of the little details of the day, bedtime is calling my name!

Until next time, be blessed my friends! And thank you for all of your sweet "Happy Birthday" comments on my post...we did have a wonderful day:)

    Love in Christ,
    ~Jenna

Which part or country is this from? Its rather ignorant to just call it "African," Africa is made up of multiple countries, hundred of cultures, languages and belief systems, etc.

Also was this originally beef? Cows arent indigient to Africa.

Dear Kal,

The recipe is from http://mennonitegirlscancook.blogspot.com/ ...perhaps they would have more of the history that you're looking for?

Blessings!

Wow! Looks like you really had a good time with this one!
I can't speak for the entire African continent, but, being a South African, I can tell you that curries were introduced to SA by imported Malay slaves. A quick google turned up this interesting site: http://www.south-africa-tours-and-travel.com/south-africa-food.html
Traditionally, we eat curries with desicated coconut and sliced banana - weird isn't it?
