Real Southern Macaroni and Cheese

3c Dry macaroni, boil and drain
1 lb. Sharp cheddar cheese
3 eggs (beaten in the bottom of a cup measure)
3c milk (enough when added to the eggs to make 3 cups)
1t salt
1/4t pepper
Butter to dot.

Boil and drain macaroni. Add a little oil or butter to keep it from sticking. Layer macaroni in a large casserole with grated cheese. Use only very sharp cheese for a real old-fashioned pie! Use more cheese than you think would possibly be good. Make several layers, ending with cheese. Beat eggs in the bottom of a measuring cup and add enough milk to make 3 cups. Add salt and pepper. Pour over casserole, then sprinkle more pepper on top. Dot with butter. Bake at 350 for 45 minutes until thoroughly set and sides are getting crusty. If milk runs when you tilt it, it is not ready. This needs to be good and solid - not mushy like modern mac-n-cheese.
This is a traditional southern meal, and we love it!!!

I have never seen a Macaroni and Cheese recipe with eggs in it before. It looks good! Thank-you for sharing this recipe!

I've got a similiar recipe to this, but this is even easier. I'm going to use whole wheat noodles, some of my homemade cheese and some veggies (love the broccoli in the picture) and this will be one healthy, kid-loving dish. Thanks for posting this!
