The State of Being Thankful

Give thanks with a grateful heart,
Give thanks to the Holy One,
Give thanks because He's given:
Jesus Christ, His son.

Such simple words...give thanks.

Simple? Yes! But too often overlooked.

When I looked up "giving thanks" in the Word, and noticed at least 5 different verses that say the exact same thing, word for word: "Oh give thanks to the Lord for He is good, His mercy endures forever..."  Psalm 106:1, 107:1, 118:1, 136:1 and 1 Chronicles 16:34, I realized that thanking the Lord for blessings and even challenges must be intended as an important part of our Spiritual walk and daily life; not to be overlooked.

Thankfulness:
"Is the expression of gratitude; acknowledgment of a favor, the state of being thankful."
- Websters Dictionary

In the Psalms, David writes over and again to "give thanks to the Lord" and so, with the encouragement of a friend, I started a thankfulness journal with the intention to write down each day just one thing that I'm thankful for. Starting a thankfulness journal gave me a place to write down and practice gratitude and thankfulness to my Lord and Savior...

And while on this little journey of gratitude, I have found that Contentment and Joy run hand-in-hand with Thankfulness. When thankfulness is practiced daily and hourly in my life, I'm content in seeing the Lord's incredible plan for me unfold each day, and in how many ways He's has blessed me. When I choose to be thankful about daily struggles and challenges, I find joy in knowing that it is for a purpose and not in vain.

And so...

I give thanks with a grateful heart...
to the Holy One...
Because He's given Jesus Christ, His Son.

Hallelujah!

"No therefore, our God, we thank you, and praise your glorious name."
1 Chronicles 29:13

I once had a friend who suggested to me that I do a thankfulness journal as well, and write down 5 things each night that I was thankful for that specific day. It was a time in my life where I was really getting caught up on the negative. The journal was such a blessing and something I love going back through and reading! Our God is incredible and SO worthy of praise and thanksgiving - thanks for this reminder!

Hi Jenna - HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I was just looking through some scrapbooks awhile back and came across pictures of you and Josh as toddlers. I can't believe how fast time flies! Last year during the month of November I decided to post on my Facebook status something I was thankful for every day of that month. I loved doing it (although I deactivated my account September 1st because it turned into a time stealer for me). So maybe this year I will do it in a journal instead. Thanks for the reminder!

So Right Jenna!!!
The thing that Helped me the most with this thankfullness journal thing, was the fact that I felt contentment and joy that I really had a lack of. I realize that I am starting to struggle in this area so I am really thankfull for your encouragement to break the journal out and start fillin' over with gratitude.
Love you soo much!
(look for and email soon)

Jenna~

I have been wanted to start a journal like this. The reason I haven't? Because I don't have a cute notebook to write in. Sad, I know. I think I'll just start in a school notebook and transfer it later. Thanks for this final push! :)
